Gilmore Girls 7/22: "Bon Voyage" (I)
3. August
With this episode of the Gilmore Girls being the last one ever (sob!) I thought I'd try something different: I picked up the ingenious idea of live-blogging at Ulrike's, who posted several hilarious live blogs of TV shows over the last couple weeks. Of course, since the last episode of the Gilmore Girls aired more than 10 weeks ago, this isn't really live, but I'll blog as I'm watching it, giving my spontaneous thoughts about every scene, raw and unfiltered. Also, I've prepared a special surprise present for you, my dear readers; you'll find it here at Your Friendly Neighborhood Lorelei. But shhhh, let's keep this just between us, ok?
Let's go, one last time:
00:01 - Previously, on Gilmore Girls: well, basically everything. Rory went to Chilton and to Yale, and now she's graduated. Dean, Jess, Dean, Logan, Logan proposed, Rory said no, Logan broke up with her. And she didn't get the internship at the New York Times. And, after 7 long years, she still mumbles.
And Lorelai? Luke, no Luke, Luke, no Luke... that's pretty much all you need to know to watch this episode.
01:10 - Oh my God, it's Christiane Amanpour! She's staying at the Dragonfly and Rory gets to meet her. In her pajamas. Rory's in her pajamas, not Ms. Amanpour. Christiane Amanpour has a strange accent. Is she British or something like that?
03:40 - The credits. The credits of this show are insanely orange. Very autumnal, I like them a lot. But why is Edward Herrmann always credited as a "special appearance"? He's a regular on the show, after all. Just wondering.
04:33 - Lorelai is sitting on Rory's bed, planning a crazy trip of all the rollercoasters in America that they want to go on for the next couple weeks. And once again, she is looking gorgeous! How does she do it, coming off so amazing when she's wearing what seems to be an H&M sweater combined with disheveled, unkempt hair? And why can't I look just as amazing when I try to copy her style? Le Sigh.
05:05 - Lorelai and Rory have one of their mile-a-minute Gilmore talks, discussing who's more scared of rollercoasters. I'm gonna miss those chatterfests.
05:15 - Blooper, Blooper! This can't be right: when the camera is facing Rory, you can see that her desk is standing in the middle of the room, while Lorelai sits on the bed with the window in her back, but in the next shot, Rory is sitting at her desk which is standing in front of the window. No way this is possible, we know that Rory's room only has one window!
05:45 - The rocket. The girls get serious for a change and discuss their respective love lives, or the lack thereof. Lorelai says that she's over Luke (big fat lie!) and that Luke isn't capable of showing his feelings (very true!).
07:31 - Luke's. He's planning Rory's reenactment graduation party, ordering hundreds of hot dogs and burgers. His meat guy (ooh, dirty!) tries to sell him brats. Luke and his meat guy say the word brats 6 times in this scene, making me giggle. Hehe, bratwurst, bratwurst! I'm so immature.
08:00 - Oh no. It's stupid Liz and her baby with the stupid name. I want to punch her (Liz, not the baby!). And seriously, people: there is no way Liz could ever afford a Bugaboo stroller. I am not buying that.
09:10 - FND at the Elder Gilmore residence. Emily is bitching about Rory being late for dinner because of her meeting with some journalist guy, and about the fact that Lorelai and Rory want to spend a month riding rollercoasters. If there's one thing Emily does really good it is bitching. The woman rules all.
10:50 - Enter Rory. She's wearing a 40-year-old lady's outfit. It's silvery grey - why Rory, why?
But she got a job! She'll be covering Barack Obama's campaign and has to be in Iowa on Monday. In three days! No rollercoasters. It's the last supper indeed.
13:05 - Saturday morning, Lorelai and Rory enter Luke's. Rory is in full panic mode about all the stuff she has to get before she leaves. Where is she going to find a laptop car adapter? Well, of course in the 24-hour laptop car adapter store, like Lorelai says. Did you really have to ask?
Also, Lorelai is wearing a gorgeous top and I want a top like that now!
14:00 - The reenactment graduation party is cancelled, causing an uproar in the Diner. All the freaks of Stars Hollow - Kirk, Lulu, Babette, Miss Patty - are freaking out over it. Lorelai tries to do the reenactment right there, handing Rory a menu as her diploma, but the freaks are not happy.
16:30 - Sookie and Luke are conspiring. Luke suggests throwing the party anyway, a week early, as a surprise. Sookie smiles knowingly at the end of this scene; Luke organizing this surprise party can mean only one thing: He still loves Lorelai. Duh, we knew that already.
18:30 - Lorelai and Rory stop by at Miss Patty's to borrow a back support thingy. Miss Patty, short-spoken and aloof, won't let them in. Good thinking, Miss Patty, since the whole town is standing inside the studio with their backs pressed against the wall. They are holding a super secret town meeting, planning the surprise party. As always, Taylor is being Taylor in all his crazy Taylor-ness. And finally, in the last ever town meeting, someone (Zach, in this case) steps up and tells him to STFU. About time, I say.
21:45 - Lorelai and Rory are walking through the town square, chattering away in Gilmorish. The whole town, led by Luke, sneaks up in their back, carrying chairs and tables to set up for the town meeting but they all make a quick retreat when they spot the Gilmore Girls. And again, I'm giggling.
Look out for Part II, coming soon to TrueLorelei.at!
